My first graphic novel

SpeedCubers

An unpublished 50-page graphic novel I created when I was 11 years old.

“Speedcubers” was my first graphic novel which follows the story of figuring out how to solve a Rubik’s cube. I created this during 2020 over nine months, using Indian ink, photoshop, and a “Wacom Intuos” pen tablet. Sadly, after contacting Mattel’s legal team (the owner of Rubik’s cube IP), I was not allowed to self publish this on amazon, due to copywrite. In hindsight, I should have contacted them earlier, however it was a good leaning experience, and WolfBound was a product of wanting to create my own IP after this incident.

My Why

I started making SpeedCubers at 11, after searching and being unable to find a suitable graphic novel to get for Chinese New year, I was struck by the random idea to create a graphic novel myself, something which I would like to read. As I had grown up reading memoirs such as “Smile” or “El Defo”, I wanted to create a memoir too. Searching around my desk, I picked up a 3X3 Rubik’s cube which I had recently learnt to solve a few weeks prior, and was a great sense of accomplishment at the time. I decided to centre my first graphic novel around this, and my journey to solve it!

Although I was really interested in fantasy, I wanted my first graphic novel to be similar to what others had created, and I my “heros” at the time all created memoirs. My parents convinced me to create a shorter graphic novel, to practise and learn the process of creating a book. You can read the full story on my About page!

Title: Timeline of SpeedCubers
Text: I created SpeedCubers over the course of a year, here is the timeline of when I created each part!
When making SpeedCubers, I drew all the pages at once. For example, this means I sketched all the pages in one go before moving onto inking all the pages. This meant that the art style would look more consistent than creating one page at a time, like how some people create web comics online.
